Progress has nearly stalled with vinyl, tube two-channel audio that was obsolete a decade ago

Some progress is still being made with speakers but many hobbyists are still mired in the obsolete vinyl/tube/two-channel/medium playing limited choice expensive audiophile records because so many ordinary popular music records sound so bad (as they always did).

The inherent advantages of surround sound can transport a person into another venue viewing a band playing on a huge screen. This is much closer to a live performance. It's hard to go back to a 27" TV after watching high-definition TV on a 61" plasma screen -- the same applies to a good home theater versus ywo-channel. It's sad when the best sound quality I've heard in the past decade was surround sound music videos played in a home theater.
