You asked for a direct answer below, here it is.

Any confidence could come from the fact that in every other area where variable subjective impression could alter the results, that blind testing of one form or another is essentially the only reliable way to get the data.
This confidence could extend to audio by asserting that both human nature and perception are the same elements in all the other areas and therefore audio is unlikely to be the one undiscovered “exception”.
While some quibble over the methodology, the premise is simple, can you actually hear any difference between “A” and “B” “IF” you only have your ears and no prior knowledge to go on.

Sounds fair to me but the problem is what happens if in this test you can’t hear the difference between a modest price cable and one that costs as much as a used car?.
This is the crux of the DBT problem, this test will reveal this, or not.
