Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Re: All audiophiles thought they had golden ears at one time

Thanks for the info, it helps me see where you are coming from.

Although my experiences have lead me to a different conclusion than yours have, based upon what you've told me I believe that our conclusions are both credible.

I'm an old electronics guy and was blown away to discover about 15 years ago that interconnects affected my system’s sound quality. I then came up with an empirical cable design, based mostly on lowering dielectric absorption, which I’ve enjoyed since then. One of these days, now that I’m semi-retired I may try to nail down the mechanisms. I do suspect that results are highly dependent upon both the details of the cables and the uncontrolled variations of the associated equipment. I doubt that cable price is a reliable indicator of sound quality, especially not on a price/performance basis.

I understand that much controversy revolves around the use of DBT. That’s insane, blind testing is always an advantage, all else being equal. However all else usually isn’t and I do believe that strongly time limited tests, which are all that’s usually practical, can be misleading due to our mind’s pattern recognition prowess. IMHO any statistically derived conclusion is a weak sister compared to actually understanding the underlying mechanisms, but better than nothing if those are the choices.
