But how do you establish what you perceive is due to the equipment?

You can't without good methodology and that includes blind testing.

Do you really "hear" the difference between two interconnects, etc.? No way of proving it without blind testing. Human perception "overdetects" differences, as jj has put it, and the link I gave to John Dunlavy before is an illustration (or, you can ask Richard Greene). Sure, you can develop a preference for a piece of equipment sighted, any of us can, and that's all right, only with sighted auditioning, we are open to many, many influences besides the sound itself (and that's all right, too), but IF you really want to know whether you can actually "hear" the differences in performance, well, blind testing is the way to go.
