Hello Kerr,How's everything? Still waiting for you to come to Orlando. I just ordered a couple of brandy snifters exclusively to sip our scotch and bourbon from as we watch the tubes glow!
I agree and disagree with part of this post of Don/yours. I do agree that our preferences aren't going to be reflected in audio components that generally measure best. Hell I know the Mastersound doesn't measure as well as many solidstate amps do, yet IMHO it replicates live music better than any other amp I've ever heard. So I know this part of your post is true and I agree with it.
However I disagree that science isn't going to prove anything. I know there are some specifications & measurements that correlate with how well an audio component replicates music, that's given. This is a direct result of scientific testing. Yet as I've said many times before I believe there are other factors that MUST be considered when the human ear/brain combo is used as the reference standard in determining what "sounds" like live music and what doesn't. What it will eventually come down to will be a combination of the measurements taken via test equipment that we know directly correlate to how well a component replicates music and what scientists discover needs to be measured and implemented if/when they take the time to learn how the ear/brain combo determines what does and doesn't "sound" like live music. When this is done we'll have a major breakthrough. Then once audio designers learn how to apply this new-found scientific information to audio components I further believe we'll have a major breakthrough in how well audio components replicate live unamplified music too!
Unfortunately for us music lovers, at present scientists aren't researching the hows and whys of the ear/brain combo's ability to instantly recognize live music from recorded and why should they? Like most things these days research like this will only be brought into being when someone somewhere sees a way to make $$$$$$$ with the new information that's discovered. Sadly those who could improve audio see no need to! Why? because they see fanatic Objectivists who'll publically claim the Citation 11 preamp, Dynaco 120 power amp, BSR equalizer and AR-9 speakers are as good as anything that was ever made in audio on one side of the audio coin. Then on the other side of the audio coin they see the fanatic Subjectivists who will buy just about anything and everything made as long as a reasonably scientific sounding explinantion is given for why it works. So what do the audio manufactuers have to encourage them to start their scientists to do the required research? NOTHING, that's what!
The Objectivists are already happy, because audio CANNOT get any better so there no motivation there and the Subjectivists will buy almost anything! So from the POV of an audio manufactuer it's certainly a lot easier and cheaper to create a scientific explination of why putting their new "magic box" into the room improves your systems ability to replicate music than actually doing true research, isn't it? So where's their incentive to do true research into audio components that can actually begin to replicate live music? I believe it Objectivists & Subjectivists like these I mentioned that actually keeps audio from progressing as much as it could. When Objectivists start honestly admitting that every properly designed amp doesn't sound exactly the same and when Subjectivists stop buying "devices" that don't plug into the system or the wall outlet and the manufactuer admits doesn't affect the audio signal anywhere in the audio system, yet somehow is still magically able to allow the sound in the room to be contain information, be more transparent, more open, have greater dynamics and frequency extension etc. Then those who can do the required research might actually start doing what's required! In the meantime it's audio designers who are also real music lovers like John Curl and other audio designers like him that keep audio progressing inspite of the fanatics on both sides of the audio coin.
