Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

You're fast!

See my reply to you below under "Bourbon".

As I said, I think subjectivists and objectivists serve different masters. The subs want more faithfulness to their own personal idea of what the music should sound like to them. That may involve "euphonically" coloring the system (I think a euphonic system is a LOT better than a discordant one!) with vinyl, tubes, different wires, etc. We have a reference of live music and we try to mold our systems to produce sound to fit that reference.

Objectivists want faithfulness to the recording. If it's not on the recording, they don't want it added or subtracted by their systems. They put their faith in the recording engineer and will live or die by his skill. That's more of a purist approach.

So when you say something "sounds great" you may be talking about something less "accurate". Still, I prefer to put my faith in the musicians rather than the R/E's. No one can capture the music in my own head better than I and I do it with audio components. That's MY recommended way of reproducing music in the home and it's right for me, not necessarily for the world. I see both sides; I simply prefer to have my music sound as lifelike as possible. Components that measure well under our currently known metrics do not do that for me. Indeed, the best measuring system I ever spent time with sounded terrible to me and others in the room, good and bad recordings alike. There again, others may hear what I consider to be excellent tube systems and find them cloying and syrupy. Preferring solid state isn't a crime.

Both approaches are perfectly fine. Subjectivists just need to be careful with the words "accurate" and "fidelity" - at least for now -although I think "realisitic" is perfect... it means to me something that seems real but may be slightly manufactured. That's a good term for the recordings themselves, no?
