Tom,I also thank you for the excellent discussion! This is the best discussion I've had with an engineer/designer since talking with Roger Russell. It was wonderful to be able to discuss differing POV's without the typical name-calling and berating of the others components that usually prevails, thanks!
I really enjoyed reading this post. You seem much more open than many others as to why some might embrace the qualities of an SET amp. My amp, so you'll have better understanding of it is a Mastersound Reference 845 integrated SET. More specifically it's a parallel SET, Class A. The tube complement stock would be 4 x 845, 2 x 12AU7, 2 x 5687, however I've purchased better (IMHO) sounding tubes so the tube complement now is 4 x 845, 2 x 6189, 2 x 6900. I can choose between either 4 or 8 Ohms load impedance taps on the back of the amp. It has 0dB negative feedback a bandwidth 15 Hz -40 kHz and power output of 40w/ch. It's fairly large at 15.7W x 25.2D x 10.2H in inches and definitely heavey at 134 lbs.
Tom you asked me What are my current speakers? I'm presently using Aliante Pinafarina Ones. These are a 2-way, bass-reflex, with a 170 mm woofer, a 28 mm. silk soft dome tweeter. The impedance is rated at 6 Ohm (min. 4)& their efficiency is 88 dB/W/1 m. They actually work quite well with the Mastersound. I'm also restoring the cabinets of a pair of RCA LC9As from the 50's. They have the original crossovers (which work perfectly) and once the cabinets have been restored I'll be installing TAD 2001 mid/high drivers and either TC Sounds custom made and designed woofers or possibly TAD 1601 15" woofers! I cannot wait to hear these babies....
