While dithering in combination with noise shaping can (real world) significantly reduce quantization distortion, it is at the expense of both reducing the bandwidth over which the reduction can be induced and also greatly increasing the noise floor over some higher frequency range within the passband.

In practical terms, perhaps 3 or 4 bits of apparent resolution can be obtained up through the midrange in a system quantized below 50ks/s before the effects of the increased noise floor at higher frequencies starts to become obtrusive. Much solid state equipment and some HF reproducers also do not handle the continuous noise energy throughout the highest audible octaves particularly graciously wrt intermodulating said noise with the intended musical signal.
