Stereo digital sound adds another aspect to this dither discussion. The quantization limits the phase resolution of the individual frequency components and dither does not fix this.

This means that you can't necessarily represent the same signal with an arbratrily small delay (much smaller than the sample period) because of the quantization level. This is irrelavent for a mono signal but is probably very important for a stereo (or multichannel) signal (where the sample positions of the channels are synchronized) in terms of imaging capability.

So larger bit depth sampling is beneficial on 2 or more channel systems since it improves phase resolution (regardless of dither) and my guess is one of the "magic" qualities of vinyl (and analog in general) is almost no limitation in this phase resolution (no to mention that things like analog timing fluctuations don't destroy the inter-channel timing relationships either)
