Re: Magic and Langmuir's "Pathological Science"

The main difference is that Blondlot (N Rays) and others were not expecting to make money with their "discovery".
Motivation was advance of science, even if hidden submotivations did exist: in the case of Blondlot, it was the hysterical anti-german campaign in France those times, furthermore in the city of Nancy, near to the new border - the part of France near Nancy had been annexed by Germany for 30 years- and Röntgen the german had his rays (called X-rays for our american friends). So, N rays -N like Nancy- seemed a great idea. Enough anyway to delude a pure disinterested scientist like Blondlot .
BTW and OT, obviously, I know this guy. When living in Nancy in my 20's, I crossed the cimetary near my house to go downhill, and I was used to flower a little the René Blondlot's grave which was on my way. He had been a professor at the engineering school I was a student at. When he died, he donated all the family properties to the city and the university. See picture below. His scientific gears of the time (mostly chiseled brass...° are kept in the school museaum.
Apart from N rays, one of his achievements is the determination of electricity velocity in metal. Collaborating with Poincaré, he determined the relationship between the new notion of impedance and electricity velocity. He observed the phenomenon of different phase and group velocities when crossing an impedance barrel, but didn't go further, lacking sensitive instruments. Should he have gotten those, maybe he would have discovered faster than light group velocities ...
