A paradigm for magical thinking.

These days, "science" has replaced Osiris, Apollo, Zeus, Yahweh, etc., as the deity to which magical thinkers appeal to effectuate their spells.

"Hocus Pocus" is a corruption of the Latin Mass' HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM, used by magicians in the bad old days as part of their spells.

A strong argument in favor of magical thinking as the origin of faith in the GSIC is that none of the proponents seems to be the least bit concerned about the possibility of harm to human tissue in proximity to an operating chip.

If the thing can make permanent physical changes in polycarbonate/aluminum discs THROUGH THE METAL OF A CD PLAYER CASE in a matter of seconds, then it seems reasonable that it could also make changes in the tissues of any persons nearby. There is no computing or steering mechanisms in the chip to distinguish CDs from people, and no explanation of what species inside the treated CDs is to be modified. Therefore, there is no physical reason why the chip should not be considered dangerous by those who believe it works.

The only reason they are not concerned is that their belief in the chip is based on magic spells and not physics.
