Serious iPod users tend to use IEM phones to block out background noise, so dynamic compression is solving a problem that can be solved through other means.However, extreme compression can possibly make the signal very difficult to amplify. I have one example of a highly compressed title (Girados) that has one track that is so demanding it causes distortion on most portable players - my home system however plays it fine.
