You said you are looking for a system that is in the range of $2,000 to $3,500 but that it cannot be made in China. I don't think you have many (any?) options at all.The simplest system would be a CD player, an integrated amp, a pair of speakers, and cabling. This might break down as $700 to $1,000 each for the CD player, amp, and speakers, plus another $500 for cabling and tax.
I can't think of *anything* at those prices that isn't made in the Far East, can you? And now if you are trying to get it to sound really good, even with mediocre CDs, I think you are going to be disappointed. It would be like saying that you want a fine European sports sedan with good performance on dry pavement and snow conditions, and it needs to be less than $15,000. It ain't gonna happen....
