The good thing about these old CDs is that they don't suffer from extreme dynamic compression that nearly all modern CDs are subjected to (I was shocked to find out that even classical titles are now subjected to compression - most of the recent titles i've purchased all have the tell tale peak flattening when you examine the digital rip). So you really get to hear the full 16 bits.Sad to say, Christine, but the compression you speak of isn't limited to CDs made over the past 15 years. Careful comparisons of many recent SACDs with their CD counterparts will show you that these, too, are severely compressed.
