Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Don't know about that, but ...

It's clear measuring many high end players that they deliberately roll off high frequencies earlier than 22.05kHz.

On some players, I have measured a roll off as early as 12-15kHz and down -3dB at 18-20kHz.

Perhaps this is an attempt to "tame" the "harsh" sound of CDs, or a desire to have better overall filter performance.

But I would prefer a flatter response (I don't mind -1dB at 20kHz, that's what my current player does).

If the intent is to tame the harshness, then I would suggest a much better way of making CD high frequencies sound better is to reduce jitter (preferably down to the picoseconds, which is not possible on many players due to PLL).
