Actually, to go even further, dynamic compression and peak limiting is not limited to digital, analog versions have been around a long time.It's also well known that tube amps have a peak limiting characteristic when overdriven (it's part of that "warm" sound), and tape saturation to a certain extent also compresses peaks.
So arguably compression have been with us since the early days. However, it is fair to say "hyper-compression" (where the difference between peak and average dB is less than 5dB) has only become the norm in the last 5 years or so.
