Michael P Steinberg. During his years with the Boston Globe, he was an arrogant, egotistical naysayer of all the great work Munch and Leinsdorf did with their international tours and lucrative recording contracts in making the BSO one of the most renowned orchestras in the world.I'm not sure which Kleiber DG recording you are referring to, the father or the son. I have the DG reccording of Carlos Kleiber's Beethoven 5th and 7th on both redbook CD and DVD-Audio. The sound on the latter has been remastered and is superb. Carlos Kleiber's rendition of the 5th is considered by many musicians and conductors to be the definitive version.
I also have the DVD-Video of Kleiber conducting the 4th and 7th. You can find the entire Video of the 7th on YouTube. It is a rare treat to watch him evoking such a splendid performance.
The following link is to an obituary of Carlos Kleiber published in the Guardian. Scan down to the end of the article for additional tributes.
