I did a side-by-side-by-side-by....well you get the point, of 4 available on SACD (you can find the complete comparative review at www.sa-cd.net in the forum, somewhere), including Karajan 62, Vanska, Kleiber, and Masur, using the score as a guide. My ranking was:1. Vanska
2. Karajan
3. Masur
4. KleiberI felt that Kleiber was externalizing the expressiveness (lots of interesting touches, but they seemed generalized and random compared to the others) and the VPO, while it played well technically, also played with less nuance and conviction than the other orchestras.
Had Szell been available on SACD it might have carried the day, but I would not hesitate to recommend the Vanska (coupled with an excellent 4th). Oddly, I don't care as much for the successor releases in his cycle, but this one is brilliant.
I was surprised by these results, by the way, but you have to hear what you hear.
