and I listened to Bohm VPO DG and Schmidt Isserstedt VPO London, as well as some of Szell Concertgebouw German Philips. Only the first & some of 2nd movement.Bohm reminds me of Klemperer, with a lot of wonderful expressive details, but too slow. My Schmidt Isserstedt with the same orchestra maybe 6 or 7 years earlier has bad sound (pre echo, scratchy copy) but I may be able to improve it with Spray and Wash. Nevertheless, it's a very good middle of the road performance.
Szell Concertgebouw has that same staccato as you point out with the Toscanini, which I also own if it's the old NBC from a radio broadcast. The Concertgebouw has occasional errors or intonation issues, esp. the solo horn and some entrances, but overall, it's similar and perhaps more expansive in sound than the Cleveland version. That's why I like Dohnanyi's Cleveland Telarc cd version, which has some of the fire and drive of the C. Kleiber but is well played and has the typical ensemble of the Clevelanders. I listened to a copy of the Solti VPO from the early 60's and I thought it really had the fire.
