I'm not sure which Kleiber DG recording you are referring to, the father or the son. I have the DG reccording of Carlos Kleiber's Beethoven 5th and 7th on both redbook CD and DVD-Audio. The sound on the latter has been remastered and is superb. Carlos Kleiber's rendition of the 5th is considered by many musicians and conductors to be the definitive version.I also have the DVD-Video of Kleiber conducting the 4th and 7th. You can find the entire Video of the 7th on YouTube. It is a rare treat to watch him evoking such a splendid performance.
Hi, Barney! - Yeah, I was referring to Carlos Kleiber - see my comments further down about all the incarnations of this performance. I guess we'll just have to disagree about the sound quality, even on the DVD-Audio (by far its best medium - I'll agree with you there!).
I used to have the laser disc of C. Kleiber doing the Seventh with the Concertgebouw, and I've been meaning to pick up the DVD-Video. I remember the engineering as basically much more coherent than the DG LP (which was all I had at the time), but still somewhat dull sounding. I suspect the DVD-Video might be better.
