Had to after reading the thread. I'd only listened before in my car so this was the first listen on my home rig (intended to do it sooner but hadn't).Wow! What is it about this performance? I mean it's not a note perfect or perfect timing performance technically and yet, for taking one inside the music, it feels pretty flawless.
I'm not good at describing these things... but I'll try.
First off the melody. It is beautifully and lovingly played and just so satisfying. There's a delicacy to the playing and yet the whole thing has great momentum and spirit. The strings almost sounded like listening to a choir at times. I don't know... there's just beauty in the playing... without going too far into hyperbole it almost sounds angelic at times.
And then... the forward momentum, the dynamic contrasts, the "life" (sometime's there really is no better term for it) are all so present and thrilling throughout. Hearing Scherchen yell out at times is the kind of thing that could easily distract or irritate me but there's something just right, in regards to the feeling of the performance, and when and how he does it feels like it echo's what is being stirred in the listener.
Maybe that's the key to this performance. It was so thrilling for him, for them, and that - along with the tenderness and appreciation they obviously have for the piece - translates... at least to my ears. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to hear/experience this.
So the top three performances I've heard on disc would be... this, the Salonen and Erich Kleiber.
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
