the CD version is harsh and unrealistic, IMO.I agree that the Reiner is an outstanding performance--many critics called it "the best" of the stereo versions in the early 60s. But it too, has some engineering issues--specifically groove overload in the loud passages. I suspect this might have been a component of the original master tape.
