Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: We each evidently have widely differing musical preferences and priorities...

"....but I would be curious to know what you don't like about the C. Kleiber."

I haven't heard him do all the symphonies, but it's very similar to my complaint about Karajan..... He goes for full-blown excitement, and kills the inner structures and natural "drive" of the music, which is in my opinion the critical element of Beethoven. C. Kleiber strikes me as approaching the composer the same way for all works, rather than treat each work as having its own unique qualities.

Someone asked me what I thought was the biggest strength in Beethoven's music, my answer is he was the antithesis to Anton Bruckner. If you've heard some Beethoven, and are about to hear something for the first time, you may encounter a few surprises, since no two Beethoven works sound alike. Conductors like Furtwangler and Kurt Masur bring out those unique qualities. My complaint about Karajan, C. Kleiber, Szell, and a few others is they make all Beethoven sound the same. And cast in the conductor's own style.

Or in other words, when I hear Carlos Kleiber doing Beethoven, I hear the conductor, not the composer.
