I don't want to overplay the objections to Szell. He is a great conductor. He is sort of like Toscanini in sometimes with staccatos in some of the cadences. I am nit picking though because the competition is so stiff with recordings of the 5th. They are all great recordings, but a few stand out. But I don't hear the slightest similarity between Szell's recording of Beethoven's 5th and Bruckner. I also would not consider it middle of the road. Krips is middle of the road--half way between Klemperer and Karajan or Kleiber (to stick with the K's)
