I have the '37 Furtwangler and listened to it again after reading your post. You are right that it is not ponderous at all. The basic tempo of the first movement is appropriately fast and vigorous. I like it, but I still get a little jarred with the typical Furtwangler rubato and liberties with tempos. The retards are a little too much of a contrast to the basic tempo--especially the big one for the big final climax. Again, its just my preference to maintain the tempo as much as possible.
