I can appreciate where you are coming from. I never claimed any more a subjective judgment about what I like about the performances I commented on. I agree that the Kleiber performance is heavy handed and strong willed, and I can understand why some people would not like his approach. It has a dark edge and is somewhat frenzied. That is what I love about it. I like the anguished dimension of Beethoven. Even the triumphant finale is slightly unable to break completely free from the pain, longing, and struggle of the earlier movement. I like pure music too, but for Beethoven 5 I want some spiritual struggle with it.
