I am listening to the Rattle right now. It is impressive, very well recorded and mostly top notch, with a good combination of weight and excitement, but there are occasional oddities. One that just went by in the last movement was a sudden drop in the dynamic followed by a rapid crescendo, done a second time when the same figure immediately repeats. That is the kind of stuff that I don't think works in Beethoven symphonies. I don't mind insertions of the conductor's point of view, but they have to be consistent with the mind of Beethoven (or MY sense of the mind of Beethoven, in order for it to work for ME).
