Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Boulez slow, precise, weighty, clear . . .

I got this because my brother liked it a lot. I have this on LP, Columbia Stereo M 30085, coupled with Op. 112, strangely enough. I had always found it rather dull, but then the 5th is not one of my favorites among Beethoven symphonies, and I usually find it rather bombastic. But since I had not heard Boulez's recording over my latest speakers, I tried it again this evening. Well, I wouldn't call it dull or boring, but it's still slow and precise, full but not too dynamic, but with a certain grandeur. I found the top a little tizzy so I turned the Quad Tilt control down a click.

I also got out the Ansermet/SRO recording, coupled with the Egmont Overture, on London Canada's Ace of Diamonds SDD 105, unfortunately, not the best pressing. It sounds better with the Tilt control turned down two clicks. It is also very clear and structural but more dynamic, though it's hard to really compare that because the balance is different. Of the two, I would rather listen to Ansermet.

I really don't like the Carlos Kleiber recording, which I find wilful and much prefer Leibowitz/RPO or Karajan (1962), which I think are also much better recorded.
