I just came across this recording of Beethoven's 5th and 7th symphonies in my collection. It was a special edition of the BBC "Live at the Proms" series distributed by the BBC Music Magazine.Since it was a live performance in presumably an outdoor venue, the instruments are not as finely detailed as Vanska's later studio recording with the Minneapolis Sympnony, but it is as equally dramatic and dynamic with a youthful zest and excitement and a deep and spacious soundstage that only a live performance can provide. Vanska is presently recording the entire Beethoven Symphonies with the Minneapolis orchestra. I am surprised he has not been mentioned more prominently in our discussions of Beethoven.
