I heard the Kleiber on LP too (also on multiple systems over the years). The problems relate to DG's primitive use of multiple microphones which clamp the sound down in an unnatural way and, furthermore, get the proportions of the orchestra wrong (specifically, the weight and relative size of the string section) - the Fifth is not as bad in this respect as Kleiber's Seventh, but I still find the engineering scandalously inept. As these performances have been re-re-re-released over the years, I kept thinking, "Maybe they'll get it right this time", and I've acquired just about every incarnation DG has offered (LP, CD, SACD, DVD-A) - what a sucker I've been!I agree about the groove overload in load passages in the Reiner performance. My current incarnation of the Reiner performance is the JVC XRCD2 (love that K2 processing!).
