perhaps more to the point is the recording we keep "coming back to", the one we turn to when we want to hear "the Fifth". This doesn't preclude listening to other, slower versions (such as Klemperer or Walter), or historical recordings (such as Furtwaengler or Toscanini) as an alternate point of view.We are of a similar mind here--I, too, keep coming back to Kleiber and the VPO (I assume we're talking about the son here). Another plus for this recording not mentioned elsewhere is the recording quality, especially if you have it on LP, as I do. Beats any of the later digital recordings in clarity, smoothness and realism, IMO. One of the best sound documents ever of the VPO.
