I think there are two distinctive tastes amongst fans of Beethoven. One is the brisk, fast approach, where sheer excitement is the intended result. The other goes for the lyrical interplays of the music, the music may seem a tad subdued, but a seemingly added dimension of applied to the character.I personally fall in the latter camp. I think what works for Tchaikovsky does not for Beethoven. I like hearing the unique tonal and rhythmic palettes that Beethoven brings, and not reduced to a showpiece.
My favorite conductor for Beethoven Fifth is Karl Bohm.... Not many conductors really do it for me on this one.
