However, consider, if you're trying to recognize something that's buried in noise that you KNOW, you can pick the parts that are above the noise from time to time, and recognize what you're listening to.This is not detection, it is confirmation. Different problem. Different solutions.
But brains are remarkably good at that, sometimes so good that they recognize things when they aren't even there. :)
