I know more about visual imaging systems, but it's the same principle. The eye has about a 200 msec integration time, but there is also some sort of integration going on in the brain.Think about a song that is just barely at the threshold of audibility. If this is a familiar song, you will "hear" the words; if it is not, you probably will not.
A machine with a long integration time may be much better than a human at extracting certain patterns well below a noise level. But when it comes to recognizing human language, machines are still way behind.
