Word intellegibility

Check out the reprinted Fletcher from the ASA. He did that for speech, in several ways (including removing frequencies, etc), in the chapter on measuring articulation.

Expect more data than you possibly imagine...

Turns out sine waves (spectrally concentrated) work better than speech for the test you mention. I don't have a cite in hand, but it has been done.

Noise masking tone is about 5.5 dB. Hellman, Zwislocki, and some others have tried this. (that 5.5 dB is narrowband noise in the same critical band as the tone. if you spread out the noise, of course you can have more noise)
