HowdyI wasn't asking a question :) I was giving a partial answer to morricab's question.
He was asking about relative signal to noise ratios and could well have had in mind whether the distortion was possibly audible in an amp whose distortion was below the noise floor. It seems to me that this is relatively independent of the issues you brought up in that I want to hear the noise floor of the original venue accurately. That's a big part of feeling like you're there in a good recording. E.g. if I were at the original recording I could hear stuff below the noise floor there so I want to hear that same stuff from the original space in my home.
