Interesting that you bring up the flute

It is one instrument where there are handful of custom makers still making interesting improvements to the instrument, although I do not play the instrument.
I do have a friend in a major symphony who does, and it has been interesting conversing with him about the modifications and such he is doing to his instrument. Changes in the mouthpiece area, in the platform and the orifice shape, just using different materials, all make a significant difference in sound. Ever hear a Titanium headjoint: ouch!. Never knew a flute could sound like a piccolo....
Like wise, I have another acquaintance who plays the trumpet and has access to both a plating set up and a lathe. It is quite interesting conversing with him about the latest changes he has done to his horn.
His latest Yamaha has been assembled with lead solder in order to get that old style warmer sound, one of only two that Yamaha has made in recent history, and will not replicate because of possible health issues.
We have a lot to learn from the instrument makers, IMHO.
