Re: How to put this...

"This is something entirely accepted by physics and the like, of course analysis of it depends very, very much on detailed, close-up understanding of every small part of the wood in question, etc, so actual analysis is rather painful. (Measurement of the results is not so painful, but not very easy either.)"

Speaking of measuring results, once by good fortune my girlfriend had three rare and expensive violins at our place: A Guarneri del Gesu, a Guadinini, and a Strad. She was playing them and trying to decide which one she liked the sound of the best. The differences between them were amazing, the del Gesu had a dark closed in on the top sound, the guadinini was light and airy but lacking some balls, and the strad seemed just about perfectly balanced with an incredibly powerful projection of sound. We decided it would be fun if we could see graphically what we were hearing, so I took a measurement mic and a 1/6th octave RTA and we looked at the spectrum of her playing a single note. The difference was just as startling as the sounds we heard. The Gurarneri had much fewer and lower level upper harmonics compared to either of the other two. The Strad had a more intense spectrum and it was quite diverse with harmonics up to the limit of the RTA (20Khz). The guadinini had lower intensity low order harmonics but had much more up to the limit of the RTA than the Guarneri.

What has amazed me in the past also is when my girlfriend takes her violin to have the soundpost inside the instrument moved by a couple of mm. This can have a profound impact on the sound as well! It is the difference in satisfying sound and dissatisfying sound (for her at least).

Speaking of ceramic instruments, I once heard a guy playing a hard plastic saxophone from the late 1950s. It sounded pretty darn good, smoother with less bite than a "real" sax. BTW, my girlfriend wouldn't be caught dead playing a ceramic violin...probably a bias but true nonetheless.
