"That the musical sound of tubes is produced mainly by second order distortion."
There have been numerous spectral plots of tube amplifiers producing not only audible amounts of 2nd order distortion but audible amounts of 4th order, & sixth order as well.
Some folks call this more "musical" which leaves me with two questions.
1. What is more musical?
The late Bud Fried used to ask me that all the time in our numerous phone converstaion before he passed away. He stated quite bluntly that in his early days he played around with and designed a few tube amps but they were horribly non linear and preferred solid state. From what I remember of our phone conversations he didn't find anything more "musical" about tube gear, and had absolutely no idea why anyone in their right mind would say that. Added audible distortion is just that. It is not part of the original performance as far as I know.2) "That the frequency response curve of pickups is the reason for their musicality."
It is very much a part of the reason why a musician will prefer certain pick ups over others whether they realize it or not. There may well be other factors but frequency response plays a key role.
