Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Re: DBT again!

"DBTs can't validate & invalidate the sonics of audio cables, the simplest passive components in the reproduction chain, let lone audio amps, the most complicated ACTIVE reproduction components.
Don't you know the problem of DBTs?"

From the stated position of the owners of this website (which makes perfect sense to me.);

"From a strictly scientific viewpoint, DBT has proved to be the only method that is generally accepted for determining the audibility of small differences between audio equipment and cables. It does work."

"IMO, your nitpickingness is way over board considering Cheever was pursuing only his second degree"

I don't care if Cheever was pursuing his first degree, his second degree, or the nth degree, or for that matter no degree at all. That has nothing to do with the discussion. The validity of research stands or falls on its own merits. The basic questions and challenges are; Does he have data to support his contention? Do they and his development of them lead to a logical conclusion, the only possible conclusion for them? Is the entire arguement relevant to the design or selection of audio amplifiers today? I've drawn my conclusion and I've told you why. You are free to disagree with me and draw your own and present your own arguement as to why his conclusions are correct and valuable.

"My niece is now working her post-doctorate research in MIT, & I am not sure she would be as thorough as Daniel in her research considering Daniel chose a historically nutshell study - audio perception."

Good luck to your niece. Cheever's presentation of history may be interesting but he did not explain why the conclusions of decades ago whether proven or not are still relevant in an entirely different world where they may be drastically out of the context of contemporary technology.

"In fairness, I appreciate he chose TAD as his thesis which he suggested one way of correlation btwn subjective & objective finding of audios"

Being as generous to Cheever as possible, I'd say lacking DBTs the limited anecdotal evidence he presented is of dubious credibility. It's hard to see how you can draw conclusions for the preferences of entire populations from a relative handful of informal opinions.

"Regardless of the degree of accomplishment in this research, he already started something more methodological & 'official' in the premise of higher education."

I have no idea if his work is cited in any coursework either in electrical engineering or in psychology so I can't comment on that. I haven't seen any test equipment which has incorporated his ideas into its design so unless you can cite some, I'd say it's had no impact there. But I will agree that it has given people who make and sell SET non feedback tube amplfiers a paper to cite in their ad copy though.
