Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Don't break or never break in - take your pick

Exercisng woofers to break in the suspension is something that I have practiced since Dr. Eugene Patronis at Georgia Tech instructed me on this procedure. I did it with Jon Risch at Peavey. I did it with Jim Novak at Jensen. I did it with Bill Bush, Jack Hidley and Ken Kantor at NHT. After that break in period (30 minutes), I would let the motor cool and then test Thiele-Small parameters. With that data the Cms would be noted and documented. Although with acoustic suspension designs, the compressed air in the box provides more restorting force than the suspension.

Any speaker with "plastic" components continually change over time - the plasticizers dry out. This is just a fact with any diaphragm, edge treatment, spiders with phenolics, etc with plasticizers. This process never ends.

The notion that break in periods last for 10, 100, 1000 or hours just seems a bit over the top to me. Take you pick - they never finish breaking in OR they are broken in after the intial settling of the suspension.

Over driving the speaker will cause cone to stress and this stress can permanently change the characteristics of the driver.

Ferrofluids, over time, will start to evaporate and burn off. This will affect the performance of the tweeter.

For people to honestly believe that their speakers will change that much (from out of the box) from regular use is just kink of absurd to me.

My moniker does say it all - zipcord - I use lamp cord for my speaker cables. I don't see the value in expensive "high end" conductors and insulators - but that is another subject - still pretty frivolous to me.

That's just me - I just hate to see companies like Monster Cable and Bose make so much profit from their marketing ploys. Monster Cable in particular since they are trying to trademark "Monter" - putting other companies with Monster in their name out of business.
