nah.. not too easy, probably just sane.man.. if all we did was think critically on gear, there'd be no point.. we'd be listening to glorified noisemakers. i think 'audiophiles' forget that they're listening to music, not just diana krall as test subject. guarantee she doesn't think about her records as such, despite their overplay like crazy in audio salons..
besides- all them old pucks and horns-- just different critters than a wilson maxx (thank the lord..). i haven't used a 'new' driver.. since i played with a jbl le8th last year.. and THAT is a beast that sounded best after i put two of 'em face to face for a WEEK in the basement wired outa phase.. good lord did they sound bad outa their crusty old boxes in an open baffle. but they got good and limber later.. mebbe that white paper, mebbe the aluminum cone, mebbe that they'd been stored for 20 years in a basement!
so that's really the essence of my disagreement with the original premise-- i've SEEN new drivers sound rottenROTTEN to my ear and get pretty good over a week- all i can attribute it to breaking in. only way 'round is to to listen to a lotta stuff before ya buy anything.. or build it- that way you've got SOME idear what yer getting into!
