Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I did one quick experiment...

64.12.116.131

...maybe 5 years ago with my well-used Paradigm Titans, and a new pair a friend bought.

Had a Denon (still have) receiver with A/B speaker inputs... no doubt about it, the new pair instantly compared sounded worse. And yes, in ways most commonly described - weaker bass as well as being harsher. Not sure if the highs were worse in itself, or just a matter of balance. You'll have a hard time convincing me there is NO break-in. Aside from that mini experiment, that has been my belief in general, to different degrees.

Ironically, the Titans were one speaker I didn't notice any diffs, new, or with a lot of playing time.

People say "one gets used to the sound"... fair enough, and I agree with that to some extent, but why can't one get "UN-used" to the sound, with a new perspective at the next listening session? For eg., if you listen for four hours/day, stereo off for 20... why would it be impossible to glean new info the next time around? It's not like one listens for the "magical" 100 (whatever) hours AT ONE TIME.

I listen at low levels... maybe it takes me longer than most (my woofs barely move) but I believe...
