Dan, I don't know why you are going out of your way to defend bipolar transistors so much. They are what they are, highly nonlinear devices that can be used, with care, to make a pretty good circuit. Recently, Charles Hansen has reverted to bipolar transistors with some success, but not everyone has been so innovative in their use.
Most everyone just makes an OK design and adds lots of negative feedback to cover up the distortion. I suspect that you do this too. The 'Caltech' paper shows that this approach is fundamentally flawed. This was not known to this degree 50 years ago, although it was suspected perhaps, and the paper is useful to forward thinking designers.
