Have you ever spent time with a batch of same type, same brand tubes and a tube tester? It's been my experience that BJTs of the same part number are virtually clones of each other. And the BJTs stay pretty much the same throughout their long lives, while the tubes lose transconductance over time, can get gassy, and generally drift quite a bit. The inherent close matching in BJTs is why things like current mirror circuits can be done with them -- it would be fun to see what would happen if you tried to do a current mirror with randomly selected tubes.
I'd have to agree that JFETS and MOSFETS, though, do seem to be pretty loose with their characteristics, particularly the gate to source threshold voltage, which varies similarly to the grid to cathode of tubes (but more stable over time).
