Ah, the linearity. Duh!

I posted the question on Tweaker's a while back about why wouldn't we want to use ceramics based on ESR, cost etc etc. By golly no one even mentioned linearity, and there was a whole bunch of handwaving too but nothing really satisfying like hearing: What about linearity? Based on the article you linked it has just hit me like a ton of bricks. Duh it's the linearity dummy. Thanks for posting that.

Fet's, J & MOS, are nice for high impedance inputs but are not as linear as BJT's making them troublesome as input devices. BJT's low impedance giving great EMI resistance but also have very little current gain making them troublesome as output devices. There are tradeoffs with all of these and IMO it is up to the designer to choose the most appropriate tool for the job. Often a mix and match approach is best. For example a BJT front end with a MOSFET final stage is popular for obvious reasons.
