It is possible to design a CD player with only one clock (for audio that is), and NO PLL.
For example, my player switches between two clocks, one for 44.1, 88.2, 176.4 family , and the other for 48,96,192 family. Absolutely no ASRC or PLL required for any media, including CD.
PLL imposes a jitter floor of at least 100ps. If you really care about minimising jitter, you need to get it down to below 20ps at the DAC. Modding an existing player won't get you there - most of them (as you pointed out) has a PLL in there somewhere.
