You're right about it being the capacitance - and I didn't do a very good job of making that clear in my 'catchall' style of posting.

The generic cabling ran to about 27-30 pf/foot and the low capacitance cabling that the friend of mine substituted for it was 11pf/foot, so that comports very well with the loss at 20khz reducing from around 4db to 1db in one of his more elaborate connections as reported it to me. This friend had a rather extensive side enterprise going where he 'restored' old recordings with various processing boxes back during the '80's and early '90's.
