Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Bad choice! This is not a power of suggestion/bias demonstration,

it's a simple case of contradictory information. Try to sound "Ba-Ba" with your mouth open! It can't be done, and as we have learned to associate not just audible stimulus, but also visual stimulus, with speech patterns its a clear case of contradictory stimulus.

Position you cursor over the play control of the video, pause for 10 seconds or so from your last viewing, obscure the video from view, and play it. There will be no confusion as to what you hear!

...

Of course that's not to say that the power of suggestion isn't a factor. Why there's one fellow here on the AA who, by his own admission, after being told a cable inserted into his system is silver *will* hear brightness. Then he need merely do a blind test comparison with a cable that isn't silver (i.e. with one he believes isn't silver) and ... presto! brightness disappears, cables both sound the same.

In such a case of extreme susceptibility to non-audible stimulus it seems at first rather obvious to suggest that he should always audition gear blind. But it only takes a little creative thinking to wonder if such is the *best* option. For example, suppose this individual *wanted* to liven up the sound of his system. Well you give him cable, inform him it is silver and ... presto! he gets what he wants! If he want deeper bass and believes it takes a big powerful SS amplifier then he just gets one of those (a nice economical Pro one) and ... presto! deep powerful bass.

In other words as clearly the strength of non-audible stimulus in him is so very weak in comparison to other stimulus, in this case just the stimulus of what he *thinks* stuff sounds like from what he's been hold or read, then *why not* utilize the more powerful stimulus?

Of course, it goes without saying that he should be very very careful about the information he exposes himself to, much better for him to be informed that a Pro amplifier has perfect fidelity than to read something like TAS only to *learn* the benefits of high-end stuff ... that's for damn sure!
