What "immoral" ? (long)

Hi.

Whenever there is any test, there should be a control reference to go parellel. Like ABX in DBTs, X is an unknown control or reference item.

In my audition panel, I purposely random invite a female who loves music but owns NO, repeat , no HiFi. She will act as the control of reference opinion of a 'third party' whose music listening behaviour has not been influenced or 'tainted' by whatsover past audio experience. Like a sheet of white plain paper - whatever comment should be reasonably neutral, hence, impartial.

As my wife says it right: "You audio shrieks are addicted to certain type of sonics you like." - implying we audio guys may be already biased towards certain sound.

Is sighted listening that unreliable?

I conducted an audition couple years back on a passive linestage vs an active linestage. The former was only a prototype & the latter was custom-built by an engineerer worked in a brandname tube-only amps maker. My audiophile friend paid $3,000 bucks for this gorgeous looking amp built heavy-duty like a battleship.

The whole audition was conducted in very casual home environment, only coffee & tea, no pens & pads. Only a digital SPL meter to make the sound levels were even btwn the passive (no gain) & the active (with lots of gain).

Without mentioning anything about which was made of what, the two units, one (the active) looks huge & georgeous & one (the passive) looked crapie & lousy homemake & tiny were sighted auditioned for three hours with music from rock to soprano vocals.

The panel, comprising the owner of the active linestage under test,
who is a rich audiophile who knows nothing about electronics, a man who is not interested in music, a DIY audio guy (yours truly) & the young lady invited to act as the audition control.

The verdict passed down was unanimously in favour of the shitty looking passive prototype.

The owner of the active linestage which he lived with for a few years
& paid big bucks, ordered the passive linestage on the spot & requested to keep the prototype pending delivery of the new order.

Listening is believing. Isn't it what is all about - the music?
